The Unknown

Henry knocked at the gate nimbly. He glanced at his wrist watch and backed the gate, viewing the car’s going to and fro the front of the building. Some seconds later, he heard a soft voice at the gate and turned back again. “Henry.” He mentioned his name and adjusted his collar.

“Ooh.. It’s you?” Victoria opened the gate. She was glad to see him come around again. “How are you doing?” She asked.

Henry shrugged. “I’m actually doing very good. So, what’s up? How’s Vivian?” He asked.

“Let’s go inside the house.” Victoria shut the door and led the way.

** ** **

Nicholas had been rolling from one side of the bed to the other. He was tired of sleeping all day long. He wasn’t used to that, and Stella wouldn’t want to hear any story from him. He sat up again when he heard a knock at the door.

    “Come in.” He yawned.

It was Stella. She was just waking up from sleep. “No wonder I haven’t seen you here since. So, you have been sleeping.” Nicholas teased her.

“Are you not the cause? Do I have anything to do now? How are you?” She asked.

“I’m actually good. I’m better than before.” He smiled.

“That’s good, what of Henry?” She asked.

Nicholas winked. “I sent him somewhere.” He quickly thought of changing the topic before she would ask him another question. “They’ve caught them all, Stella.”

    “Who else, Nick?”

“The Prince has been caught, the Queen also.” He replied.

“Wow. That’s  a good news. Then, all is well now, right?”

Nicholas grinned. “Sure. I’m really happy.” He replied.

“It is neccesary, Nick. Doris shouldn’t come late today, then. Anyways,  I want to go and cook. I’ll be right back.”

    Nicholas nodded.

** ** **

“Hey, how are you?” Henry smiled as he saw Anthony.

“Fine Sir.” Anthony stood up from his seat. “Good day.”

“Yeah, how’s been your holiday?” He asked.

“Fine and I don’t even know what else to call it.” He beamed.

“It is alright, the confirm thing is just that you’re enjoying yourself.”

“Let me call her.” Victoria told Henry and walked inside.

“Okay.” Henry waved. His eyes began to dart around the living room, he could see different picture frames of Victoria, Vivian and her son, she never saw any of a man there. “She must be a divorcee.” He finalized within himself. “If not, she wouldn’t be staying with a friend.” He kept muttering till Vivian got to the living room.

    “Hello.” She sat down, smiling.

“Hey, Vivian. How are you doing?”

She nodded. “I’m good. I really appreciate the help of the other day, God really bless you!”

Henry chuckled. “You don’t need all that, that’s how this world is meant to be, not being stingy or being wicked. A man that could have shot you too, is meant to die in jail.”

Vivian beamed. “Anyways, thanks once again. How do we entertain you now?”

“Ooh.. Don’t worry. I’m full already.” He grinned.

“No, you can’t come here without tasting anything.” Victoria walked inside the house.

“And I’m really okay.” He repeated. Deep inside of him, he’s been anticipating for what they’d bring out for him.

“So, you just came to check on me, right?”

Henry nodded. “Sure. I have just been busy, I’d have came earlier.”

“Really? What do you do?” She asked.

She had started questions for the gods now, you better don’t ask a question that will keep me quiet.. Henry thought within himself. “I’m into computer.” He replied.

    “Really?”

    “Sure. What of you?”

“I haven’t been working. I’ve just been there.”

“Really? You have no problem, at least money will still be flowing in from all sides, even abroad.”

Vivian laughed. “Who’s sending money from abroad?”

“Don’t you have a family there? Probably your husband.”

Vivian came out with a tray of juice and straw. She placed It at his front  and opened the juice. “Please just manage this.” She smiled. Thank God! He had thought.

“You shouldn’t have bothered yourself, Vic.” He smiled.

“Please, drink.” She went to sit down.

“Anyways, should I say I never married or he died?” Vivian just said.

“Died? I’m really sorry about that.”

Victoria just cleared her throat and rolled her eyes. Anthony already left the living room when he saw a visitor, maybe that made her talk that way.

Vivian understood Victoria’s code. She just chortled and continued. “Yes, many years back. I have just been living all by myself.”

“I’m really sorry about that.” He carried the juice and started drinking.

** ** **

“I have noticed a change in your countenance, Doris. What’s wrong?” Craig asked her.

She shook her head. “Nothing actually. It’s just that i saw a mark on the Prince and it looks like I have seen it on someone before, I just can’t remember who.” She replied.

“Really? From what I have heard, the mark on him is a symbol of royalty. All royal children have it.” He told her.

“Really? So outside the Royal Family, no one else can have it?”

    Craig nodded. “Yes.”

“I just can’t remember who it is.” She tried to mask her feelings.

“Don’t let that worry you, Doris. You’ll remember when it’s time for you to.” Craig told her.

    She nodded with a smile.

** ** **

Since Henry already got what he wanted to know, he knew his departure would be quick. Not further than that, he stood up and told he would still check some people. He made sure he finished his drink before thinking of leaving at all.

He finally got to Stella’s place and hurried in to break the news. Then, she saw Stella in the room. This wouldn’t be the best time to break the news, he had thought and sat down. “Stella, where were you before?”

“I slept off.” She replied and stood up. “I have to leave, the food is on the fire.”

    “Okay.” He was glad.

As soon as she left, Nicholas rushed up from the bed. He groaned again, he had forgotten he had a wound and didn’t sit up gently. “How far? How did it go?”

“Hey, a question at a time!” He contorted his mouth. “In fact, you called me an idiot before I left, don’t ask me any question.”

    “Henry na, please talk!”

“Okay, idiot.” He pulled out his tongue. “She said her husband died long time back.” He told him.

“Foolish boy, that’s all you went there to hear.”

“Idiot! You should have gone yourself.”

Nicholas laughed so hard. “Unserious child. Wait, I hope you didn’t take anything there?”

“Sure. I went straight to business, they wanted to give me juice, but I declined.”

Nick smiled. “Better, because I know you very well.”

    “That’s your business.”

“But Henry, do you think I can appear now?”

He contorted his mouth again, looking at him with a side of his face. “Did you disappear before?”

“Idiot, I have forgotten I was asking someone like you a question.” He hissed.

Henry laughed. “Question for the gods.”

    Nick laughed and hissed.

** ** **

“I hail thee, Vivian.” Victoria teased her.

“What should I have said?” She laughed.

Victoria smiled. “At least Nick is not dead.”

“He asked of my husband, not the father of my child.

Victoria clapped her hands together. “So, you’d have answered him if he really asked of Anthony’s father?”

She smiled. “I don’t even know. But your guy finished the juice.”

They laughed. “I thought he said he didn’t want.”

    They continued laughing.

** ** **

“How many of them were at home?” Nicholas asked Henry.

“Three. Vivian, her son and her husband.” He replied.

    “Husband?” He widened his eyes.

“Ooh.. sorry, and Victoria.” He laughed.

“When I call you idiot now, people will think I’m being wicked.”

“It’s your problem, boy. Anyways, you can appear, let’s see what it’ll look like.”

“Really? But, what of her friend and son?”

“Do we have business with them? Just appear, my friend!”

“Should we go now?” Nicholas asked.

“Wait, why are you even asking me? Am I her husband or what?”

“Shut up, you can never be.” He rolled his eyes.

Henry laughed. “Rubbish boy. Anyways, let’s go.” He said.

“How do we do it? Stella must not know I’m going out.”

“Okay, you know how you usually do The Unknown, start walking stealthily till weare able to leave successfully.”

“Hmmm.. first time you’ll use your sense.” He brushed to his feet and held on to his wound. “This is really painful.”

    “Let’s go, my friend!”

They began to walk as planned till they left the house successfully. Thank God the car was parked outside, it would have been another trouble.

** ** **

“We need some foodstuffs, Vivian. I’ll go to the market now.” Victoria told her.

“Thanks so much for the care, Victoria. I really appreciate you.”

Victoria smiled. “You are not serious. Why are you thanking me now? It’s your problem by the way.” She carried the tray and went to the kitchen to drop it before getting ready to go.

As soon as she was ready and came to the living room, Anthony also rushed out. “Can I follow you, mum?”

Victoria smiled. “Sure, son.” She winked at Vivian.

“So you guys are going to leave me here alone?”

Victoria pulled out her tongue. “At least we didn’t cause you to be like this.”

“Okay, I’ll surely deal with you all.”

Soon, Anthony came out. “Bye, mum.” He waved at Vivian.

“You better don’t wave. You now have another mother.” She teased.

“If you like don’t go and rest.” Victoria said as she left with him.

Vivian just turned on the television set. She was right on time. It was the time the news of the Prince was being broadcasted she turned the television on. “Thank God!” She just exclaimed.

“Hmm… The Unknown.” She just said as she heard the officer’s comment. “They shouldn’t be after him, after all he’s been shot already, why do they need to still be looking out for him? You won’t succeed at doing it..” she just kept passing her comment on the news till she heard a knock.

“Who again?” She wondered. At least if it was Victoria and Anthony, they had the key and wouldn’t bother knocking. She stood up as she held on to her wound too. She walked to the gate and asked who was there but got no response for three times.

She looked through the hole but didn’t see anyone. “Who’s there?” She asked again. She beginning to get afraid when she heard no response and turned back.

Just then, she heard her name softly. That voice! She affirmed and walked back to the gate. She gradually unlocked the gate with fear. As she opened the gate, she couldn’t believe who she saw.

“Ni.. ni.. ni.. Nick.. Nicholas..” She began to stutter.

    “Vivian.” He called her name.

    “No..” she went down instantly.

… continues…
