The Unknown

Victoria had been pushing it down, trying to hold it back until they got home. She had been wondering, just cogitating on the issue. Why on earth would Vivian lie to Officer Craig as Mrs Priscilla? She had found some answers though, but, she still felt those answers weren’t correct enough and if they were, they weren’t vivid and sensible for her to have lied.

If she lied just because she didn’t want to expose herself as a single mother, why would she change her name to Priciscillia then? Or, if she changed it because she wouldn’t want Officer Craig to keep calling her, she had condemned that. It wouldn’t make any sense.

Hopping down from the vehicle, she waited to pay the driver while Vivian and Anthony already walked on, battling with the gate. The gate had it’s own personal problems too. They all had thought the problem was peculiar when everywhere was hot- due to radiation from sun, but now, everywhere was cool.

It shouldn’t be of shock to them. The only time they usually try to get the gate opened was on Sunday afternoons, after Church Service. Then, they had all left the house and returned to battle with the key and keyhole before the gate eventually got opened.

Victoria smiled to herself. At least, she, who had been left to pay the driver would meet the so-called Mrs Priscilla battling with the gate. “You haven’t gotten it, or what?” She advanced further.

Vivian was already tired of it. A woman who had been up and doing to find her son since morning. She hated stressing herself too much. If anything got laborious, she would let go of it. Her continuous try was for her to use as a proof when Victoria finished paying the driver. She had been expecting her to open the gate too. “Come and open this gate.” She said as she cruised backward and stood akimbo.

Victoria looked at her. She could read it in her that she was tired already. She knew some words were still left unsaid. If she eventually got to her own ease, she would still lambast Anthony for opening the gate for a stranger. She just chuckled and nodded. “All to your will, Madam Priscilla.”

Vivian had been expecting the bomb too. Though she was still shocked as she heard it, she chortled and clapped her hands together as she drifted backwards. She knew Victoria must have been holding herself back, probably because they were in a taxi.

The gate was opened and Victoria walked inside the house and covered her mouth as she yawned. “We love you Jesus.” She drawled as she yawned.

“We are all welcome back home.” She said as she winked at Vivian and shut the door, all walking inside.

Nicholas and Henry walked into Doris’ place and shut the door slowly. Henry just gandered at Nicholas, shaking his head as he wondered where Nicholas got the key to the innocent ladies’ house.

He shook his head in disapproval. Who on earth told him the ladies were innocent ones? He had been dying to meet Doris, since Nick told him about her. She was an officer, so, a human whom he should be very careful of. Wait, why  are my thoughts going this way? Is she a woman or a lady? He had thought to himself as he took in a long breath and bashed Nicholas’ back. “How did you get the key?”

Nicholas smiled. “We are really close friends, you will understand better.” He replied as he motioned ahead.

Henry stood by the door just smiling, still wondering where he met the ladies. Henry was a friend he met many months back, when he was going to perform some musicals for an occasion and helped him. They gradually became friends, till they were as close as they were, now.

He caught up with the distance as soon as Nicholas got near the door. He wouldn’t be left to come in alone, why would all eyes be on him if he wanted to enter into the place? He just grinned as he pushed Nicholas forward and both walked in.

    The diary.

    Some weeks after.

“What is your name?” Prince Dennis asked the lady. He had always wanted to ask her but he felt it wouldn’t be neccessary to start questioning her. She had gotten better now, so, he needed to know her more.

“I’m Margaret.” She replied the Prince solemnly.

Prince Dennis smiled. “I’m sure you know that’s the name of my mother, the Queen.

    “Sure, your majesty.” She replied.

“I now see that you’re feeling very well. Now, it’s time to ask some series of questions from you.” He paused, he expected her to give him a go ahead.

    “I’m all ears, My Prince.”

Dennis nodded with a smile. That was what he wanted too, so, he wouldn’t look as if he was bothering her. “Who shot you?” He enquired.

Margaret wiped her tears as she began to speak. “My father’s brother.” She said. She contiued by giving a brief history of herself and how much she had suffered.

“You know you’re just getting better please stop crying.” He tried his best to calm her down.

    “Thanks to you, my Prince.”

Dennis smiled. “According to this Doctor, he said someone have been treating you earlier. Is that true?”

“Yes. Initially, I was helped by Prince Harry.”

“Harry? He helped you? Really?” Dennis asked her.

    “Yes, he did.”

“But you haven’t completed your treatment, why did you leave? I’m sure he sent you away, right?”

“I ran away because I feared for my life. I was afraid he would later kill me.”

Deniis chuckled. That wasn’t a lie, it was just like his brother. “Thank God for the life.”

“Something that’s just making me think in a way I can’t explain is about the death of the native Doctor whose house was razed down.”

“Hmmn… you think my brother did it?”

“Hmmn… No.” She shook her head.

Dennis laughed. Even if she said yes, he knew the truth himself. But, he expected her not to open up too because he would still fight for his brother. “I’m sure you’ll be a friendly person.”

Margaret smiled. “Thanks for helping me, My Prince.”

“You don’t have to! All I need from you is to give me a detailed description of the abode of your father’s brother.”

“No, my Prince. Please just leave him.”

“I should leave who? Why would he shoot? What if you were shot somewhere else and something bad happened after? Margaret, no!”

“A man shouldn’t judge with his own hands. One day nemesis will catch up with the evil doers.”

Dennis felt touched. Had he been ever spoken to that way? He smiled and nodded. He had started liking her.

Nicholas threw himself at the sofa and gave a gleeful shriek. “How are you girls?”

“Good evening.” Henry greeted Doris and Stella as he sat close to Nicholas.

“Good evening.” Stella and Doris chorused, replying him.

“Don’t I need a reply too?” He made his voice husky as he addressed the two.

Stella just hissed. “I guess you’re Henry, right?” Stella asked Henry with a smile.

Henry nodded. “I’m Henry Paulson.” He said with a beam.

“I’m Stella, this is Doris.” Stella introduced the two of them and Doris just waved.

Henry waved back. “It’s nice meeting you.”

“The pleasure is ours.” They said together.

Nicholas hissed. “Who asked you to introduce? And you, Henry, if Doctor Ramsey gets hold of you!”

Henry chuckled. “Just because I just greeted them?”

Nicholas sat up. “Sure. Especially, Stella.”

Stella laughed. “Nicholas! What’s up with you?”

“Nothing much, just to tell you I’m not hungry, don’t serve me any food.”

“Who’s going to invite you to eat before? What are you going to eat?” Doris faced Henry.

“I’m alright.” Henry smiled with a wave.

“What? He hasn’t eaten, why do you like forming!”

Henry laughed. “This is not a matter of forming.”

Doris’ phone buzzed. “Hello.” She said as she picked up the call.

“Ooh…” she ended the call and brushed to her feet. “Craig’s here.” She walked outside.

“Craig’s wife.” Nicholas teased her as she left.

“So, what do you do for a living?” Stella asked Henry.

“I work in a studio and do follow Nicholas around if there’s any performance.”

“That’s cool, unlike Nicholas that sleeps from morning to evening.”

“I do? Even if I do, I know it’s rare I don’t perform in a weekend. See girl, I understand myself, no one else.”

Henry laughed. “I told him about it today, don’t mind him.”

Craig and Doris walked into the house. Nicholas’mind was at rest. It was at least a time to know the latest development and what to be done if there was any trouble. He turned his head and cleared his throat. “Officer Craig!” He saluted on his seat.

Craig grinned. “You this Nicholas.” He swung his index finger. “Good evening, Stella.” He greeted Stella as he picked a seat.

“Officer Craig! You’re welcome here.” Stella smiled.

“Thanks. Good evening.” He greeted Henry too.

    Henry replied him.

“How was the day? The investigation?” Doris made her way beside Craig.

“Hectic. I don’t even know the right word.” He rubbed his forehead as he rested his back against the sofa.

“This same case or were you invited to help another case?” Doris asked.

“It’s the same one, but in another dimension.” He replied.

“Another dimension?” Doris cleared her throat. “What’s it? Was the list not released?”

“It will be sent tomorrow. I just keep wondering why some things look so dark. A young boy was recovered from kidnappers, today.”

“Really? Who are the officers that got the boy?”

“No officer. It was The Unknown that brought the boy.” He replied.

“Huh? The Unknown?” Nicholas said, he looked surprised as he drifted forward. He was just trying to mask his feelings and look shocked too.

    Henry smiled faintly.

“Yes. The guy’s a genius, I tell you.”

“A genius? How? Wasn’t he the kidnapper?” Nicholas said.

“He isn’t! The mother of the child is Mrs Priscilla, the boy himself is Anthony.”

Anthony. Nicholas muttered. Mrs Priscilla… He wondered. If he had truly saved the boy he thought he had met before, the mother’s name was Mrs Priscilla. He began to think too. It outrightly meant the young boy of that day was in no way related to Vivian. How would he even know? Surmising everything already! He thought to himself as he swooshed out a long breath and looked at Craig again.

“So, who are the kidnappers?” Stella chimed in.

“We know them already, on the other hand, we don’t.” Craig replied.

How come? Did they loose them already? Henry had thought as he drifted forward to listen well.

    “How?” Doris asked.

“They were locked inside the booth of the car which The Unknown used to drop the young boy. I haven’t spoken with them because one of them have been shot and the other too should have been in shock. They were taken to the hospital.”

“He was shot? How would that person called The Unknown have shot one of the kidnappers? That’s wrong!” Nicholas exclaimed, painting himself as if he really hated him.

“Why? We haven’t started the investigation for real. By the way, he might have done that just to shield himself. I haven’t really spoken to that boy called Anthony, Mrs Priscilla took her away already. Investigations starts fully, tomorrow.”

“That’s fine. So, the boy followed the mother already?” Doris asked.

“Yeah. I came to check on you and tell you these. I hope you’ll make it to..”

“Sure!” She interrupted with a smile.

“I know you’re a strong lady.” He patted her shoulder and stood up. “I’m tired and I have to leave.”

“Ooh… Good night, Craig.” Nicholas protracted his hand for a shake.

    They exchanged hands and smiled.

“Goodnight, Craig.” Stella waved at him.

    “Same here Stella, Thanks.”

Vivian sat down and pulled Anthony closer to herself. She examined his face and saw some marks. “What made this place look this way?”

It was the mark Frank’s slap left on his cheek. “I was slapped.”

“No! Frank! That guy is an unfortunate being!”

    “Mum, stop that.”

    “Why would I? I shouldn’t!”

“It’s wrong. You shouldn’t curse him, instead of cursing him, pray for the one who saved me.”

Vivian looked at him for seconds. “Go and shower, I’ll get you what to eat so we can discuss.”

“Alright, Mum.” He walked inside the room slowly.

    “Mrs Priscilla!” Vicky tittered.

Vivian managed to smile. “What’s your problem?”

“Why did you lie to the guy?”

“I lied because I do not want anyone to run after my life and start pressuring me!”

“I am not returning there tomorrow.”

    The diary.

“What do you know about the death of the native Doctor?” Dennis asked Harry.

Harry stood up from his seat. He looked umbrageous, hitting his fist on his left palm as he moved closer to Dennis. “What are you talking about?”

    “You know it, don’t you?”
“I still don’t! What on earth are you talking about? Who did I kill?”

Dennis laughed. “Even if you get more livid than now, it will change nothing! Don’t raise your voice at me because I’m your eldee brother. Don’t think I have been a fool, I haven’t! I have been trying to control my temper too. If you get me indignant to a stage I can’t control, I might kill you.”

Harry softened as he moved backwards. “Alright, fine! Kill me! I don’t know what you’re talking about and I demand to know.”

“You killed the native Doctor, didn’t you?”

“What are you talking about? Do you think you can brag at me because you’re the heir apparent? I don’t care about that!”

“Don’t try to change the subject of discussion. Why did you kill the man?”

“Dennis! Don’t get me cheesed off! I hate it!”

“When you get browned off or blue in face, I don’t care! You killd the man and razed down his house so people would think the man died due to the fire outbreak? If you don’t know, the man’s ghost will haunt you!”

“If it would, it wuld have started it’s work the day he died.”

“Now I know the reality. You killed him. Anyways…”

They heard a loud noise from the King’s room and both rushed there.

“You just have to return there! Mrs Priscilla, you don’t have a choice!” Vickie said to Vivian.

“I don’t want to. At least, they’ve caught the evil doers, let them leave my son.”

“It doesn’t matter. Clear the name of your son completely. Besides, we have to know what will happen at the end of the day.”

“I didn’t tell the officer my real name because I don’t want them to start shouting around. In no time, they’ll put it down in newspapers.

“Have your now forgotten that Frank knows your name?”

She hissed. “I’m even fed up! Till tomorrow.” She walked away.

    The next morning.

Engineer Ashley shut down his laptop and stood up. He was about going inside his room to shower when he saw Beatrice. “Good morning, dear.” He said and picked up the laptop.

    “Good morning, Dad.” She replied.

It was just past six in the morning. Engineer Ashley had been working on his p.c since five am, trying to bring out some plans of a building. “When did you get back home yesterday?” He asked her.

“Not so late, Dad. I was with Prince Edward.”

    Ashley laughed. “Love birds.”

    Beatrice gave a cheeky smile.

“How’s everything going with you two?”

“Nice, Dad. I heard the cook just left without prior notice.”

“That was what that gatekeeper told me likewise. I should get another one today.”

“This is a big burden! I have been wondering on how I’ll eat to the office.”

    “Try a fast-food.”

“I just hate this mess! The guy should be gotten and dealt with!”

“It’s alright. Is your friend still sleeping?”

“Yes. She came very late yesterday.”

“Alright, I want to get prepared for work. At least a cup of coffee should suffice, this morning.”

“I’ll get it done, Dad.” She walked closer and hugged him.

Ashley went upstairs to get prepared for work.

Henry had taken his bath. He was clad in a long sleeve shirt and black fitted trouser. He was puttinf on his shoes when Nichols oas laughed out. “A guy going to apply for the post of a cook, wearing an Italian pair of shoes, right?”

Henry laughed. “It’s fun. But, it’s true. Won’t they suspect anything?”

“How? But, it will be advisable to putnon a Dunlop Slippers.” He laughed.

“Why are you laughing now? What’s funny?”

“Just imagining it. But, I really thank you, Henry.”

“My greatest fear is for you not to be caught. Or should I say us?”

Nick smiled. “They can’t get us. Craig will start working on my case so much. I don’t even know what to do.”

“What to do? At least there’s no print! We made the operating neat and clear.”

“See how he’s talking as if he was the one who executed the most difficult aspect.”

Henry chuckled. “I’m going there to do so now.”

“I should never cease to move close to Doris, so that I can listen to the latest news everyday.”

    “That’s nice. Now, I’m set.”

“Didn’t I ask you not to out on these shoes? A pair of palm slippers will be better.”

“Okay.” He said and got the palm slippers.

He finished putting it on and looked at Nicholas. “Let’s go.”

“You still don’t look like a maid. With time, you will blend.” He stood up.

“I’m just an acting cook, not a maid!”

    Nicholas laughed.

Henry stood at the front of the gate. He was afraid but on the other hand he felt there would be no problem. Nicholas had bidded him goodbye and told him he would call him later.

Henry was welcomed by the gatekeeper and taken inside. He walked to the living room and admired it. It was an abode of riches. “Good morning.” He greeted Beatrice that was on seat.

“Welcome.” Beatrice smiled. “The gate keeper said you’re the new cook, right?”

“Yes, I am.” He bowed again.

Engineer Ashley walked back into the living room. “Who’s this?”

“The new cook.” Beatrice quickly replied.

    “Really? What’s your name?”

“Em… Mike.” He nodded with a grin.

“Welcome here. I don’t think I can wait any longer. Beatrice, interview him and let’s know what’s up with him.” Engineer Ashley walked out.

“Okay, Dad.” Beatrice waved at him.

“Come.” Beatrice said as she sat down. Henry wanted to seat too but the shout from Beatrice made him rush to his feet again. “You want to sit while I, your boss is sitting too, right?”

    “No..” he drawled.

“Learn to always add a sign of respect to my name! Always use ma.

    “Okay ma.”

Just then, Beatrice’s friend- Lizzy came downstairs and saw Henry standing. “Henry, is this you?” She said and moved closer.

Henry also looked at her and froze.
